Hamid Ismailov is Head of Central Asia and Caucasus services at the BBC World Service. Born in Kyrgystan, Hamid was brought up in Uzbekistan; a distinguished poet, he has written a number of novels, one of which, The Railway, was translated into English and published in 2006. All his works are banned in Uzbekistan, from where he was forced into exile in 1992.
